Novodevichy Convent (Moscow, Russia)

Das Neujungfrauenkloster wurde im 16. Jahrhundert gebaut und bis ins 17.Jahrhundert ständig erweitert. Es wurde als “Wehrkloster” gebaut und über die Jahrhunderte gingen auch Angehörige der Zarenfamilie ins Kloster, wie z.B. die Witwe des Zaren Fjodor Iwanowitsch im Jahr 1598. Das Kloster wurde 1611 von polnischen Truppen niedergebrannt, aber kurz darauf wieder aufgebaut. Im Jahr 1922 wurde das Kloster geschlossen und in den Gebäuden wurden verschiedene Organisationen untergebracht. Seit 1934 ist das Kloster eine Außenstelle des Staatlichen Historischen Museums. Zum Kloster gehört ein Friedhof auf dem bekannte Persönlichkeiten wie Boris Jelzin, Nikita Chruschtschow, Anton Tschechow und Wladimir Majakowski ihre letzte Ruhe fanden. Seit 2004 gehört das ursprüngliche Kloster zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe.
