Cathedral of Christ the Savior (Moscow, Russia)

Die Christ-Erlöser-Kathedrale ist die größte russisch-orthodoxe Kirche der Welt. Sie liegt unweit vom Kreml direkt am Ufer des Flusses Moskwa. Ursprünglich wurde das Gebäude in den Jahren 1860-1883 erbaut und sollte an den Sieg Russlands über Napoleon Bonaparte erinnern. Stalin ließ aber die Kathedrale 1831 sprengen, um dort den “Palast der Sowjets” zu bauen, der aber nie fertig wurde. Das Fundament erwies sich nämlich als nicht tragfähig und so wurde das Gebäude 1958 umgebaut und 1960 als Schwimmbad eröffnet. Nach dem Zusammenbruch der Sowjetunion wurde 1992 mit dem Bau der Christ-Erlöser-Kathedrale begonnen, die dann im Jahr 2000 eingeweiht wurde. Sie ist eine 1:1 Kopie der ursprünglichen Kathedrale. Das Gebäude ist am höchsten Punkt 103 m und ins Innere passen 10 000 Menschen. Sie kann auch außerhalb von Gottesdiensten besichtigt werden.
