Cutty Sark (London, United Kingdom)

The Cutty Sark was built as a tea clipper and launched in 1869. Tea clippers were special fast boats designed to bring the tea from China to England as quickly as possible since the first tea of the season to arrive commanded the highest prices. Unfortunately she wasn’t actually a particularly fast ship and derived her fame from the actions of her captain who completed a race with an improvised rudder. After the opening of the Suez Canal and the advent of steam travel, the tea clippers were rarely used and Cutty Sark worked the route between Australia and the UK carrying wool. After she was no longer used commercially, Cutty Sark was preserved as a museum ship and tourist attraction and is part of the National Historic Fleet. She is located in Greenwich, near to the National Maritime Museum. Cutty Sark is currently not accessible by the public because she was badly damaged by a fire in May 2007 and is undergoing extensive conservation work. She is not expected to be on show to the public until Spring 2011.
