The Monument to the Great Fire of London, commonly known just as “The Monument”, commemorates the fire that destroyed most of the City in 1666. The 202 ft high Doric column is located at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill, not far from the Northern end of London Bridge, and very close to the exact location in Pudding Lane from where the fire started. The Monument, which is the highest isolated stone column in the world, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, also famous for designing St Paul’s cathedral, and Robert Hooke. The structure was built with Portland stone and is topped by a copper flaming urn that symbolizes the fire. A viewing platform from which panoramic views over the city can be enjoyed is situated right underneath the urn. It can be reached via a winding staircase of 311 stairs.
