Savile Row (London, United Kingdom)

Savile Row is a street in Mayfair in London, which is acknowledged world-wide as a major centre of bespoke tailoring. It lies just to the west of Regent Street, running between Conduit Street and Vigo Street. The street dates from the 1730s when the Earl of Burlington sold land for development, and it was named after his wife Lady Dorothy Savile. In the early 1800s streets around had tailors’ workshops but the first tailor to set up shop on Savile Row was Henry Poole in 1846. The second half of the 19th century was its heyday, when it became a by-word for austere, quality gents’ tailoring. The bowler hat was invented here. Its tailors continued to be popular with the US market into the 1930s, but post-war some changes were needed and Nutters managed to keep the street in the forefront of style in the 1960s. Savile Row still commands respect and the Savile Row Bespoke Association was formed to protect its interests. The oldest family owned tailoring firm in the country, now known as Ede & Ravenscroft, was operating in the area even before Savile Row was laid out and still trades there today. Other well known names in the street include Gieves & Hawkes, Hardy Amies and Ozwald B
