Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs is one of the most visited mountains in the world. At a height of 14,115 feet (4,302 m) above sea level it is one of the many so-called “fourteeners” in Colorado and all of it that is situated at above 14,000 ft was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1961. The mountain was named in honour of explorer Zebulon Pike, leader of an expedition in 1806 during which he tried to reach the summit but had to give up. Pikes Peak offers a large variety of outdoor recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, snow shoeing, boating, fishing and wildlife viewing. A self-guided nature trail can be found at Crystal Reservoir where visitors can also find self-propelled boats for rent. Animals living at the peak include black bear and bighorn sheep. The summit house can be reached either by walk via the 13-mile Barr trail, over the Pikes Peak Highway or with the Pikes Peak Cog Railway.
