The Magnificent Mile (Chicago, USA)
The Magnificent Mile of Chicago is Where You Want to Be
One look down the Magnificent Mile will capture your attention, but one stroll will make you want to stay. There’s a reason this part of town is called the Magnificent Mile – because it is just that.
Called “The Mag Mile” for short, the area covers a mile-long stretch of Michigan Avenue from the Chicago River to Oak Street/Lake Shore Drive. Although it has always been a key commercial centre, it has now become one of the most affluent parts of the US.
Today, the Magnificent Mile is home to nearly 1000 shops, 300 restaurants, museums, nightlife, hotels, residences, and business offices. That’s a lot to pack into such a short distance.
Something Special Happens in November on the Magnificent Mile
There’s never a dull moment on the Magnificent Mile because there’s always something going on. This makes it a year-round destination and a rather exciting one. However, if you’re hoping to see something unforgettable, come just before the holidays. On one weekend of November, Michigan Avenue hosts the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.
Among other festivities, one of the highlights of this event is the parade-like ceremony where Mickey and Minnie Mouse light up one million trees. At the end, don’t miss the fireworks show, announcing that the holiday season has begun.
The Magnificent Mile is One of the Top Spots to See in the World
The Magnificent Mile not only the largest shopping area of Chicago, it is also rated as one of the best ones in the world. From luxury boutiques to popular mid-range retailers, you’ll find an impressive amount of boutiques and shopping centres lining both sides of Michigan Avenue. Dining options are plentiful as well. You’re guaranteed to find an eatery for every mood and occasion.
If you have a thing for architecture, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Magnificent Mile is home to many famous buildings. Make sure to check out the Chicago Water Tower, one of the city’s oldest structures, as well as the Tribune Tower and the Wrigley Building.
Magnificent Mile Hotels Still Have that 1920s Charm
Quite a few hotels can be found on Michigan Avenue or close by in downtown Chicago. However, there are a few iconic Magnificent Mile hotels that are worth a stay or visit, as they still have that iconic Chicago style of the 1920s. The Drake and Intercontinental Chicago Magnificent Mile Hotel are two such historic venues.
Among all Chicago hotels, or ones on the Magnificent Mile, the Intercontinental stands out. Divided between two towers, one old and one new, this hotel boasts an impressive wellness centre with a spa and Olympic-sized pool. It’s the perfect place to unwind after all that shopping.
For something more low-key, consider the Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile. Right off Michigan Avenue, this modern and comfortable hotel is suitable for both business and leisure with amenities such as on-site dining and rooftop garden. Some rooms here are known to have stunning views.
