Quayside East (Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom)

Newcastle has a long history of shipbuilding and coal mining and the oldest part of Tyneside is its Quayside. Dominated by the Castle Keep and the Cathedral this area still features buildings dating back to the sixteenth and seventeen centuries. Quayside East (starting at the Tyne Bridge and progressing downstream beyond the Gateshead Millenium Bridge) is the home of the Baltic Gallery and the Sage Concert Hall. Much of the area is now pedestrianised although there is a regular service from the city centre by the yellow Quayside shuttle buses. There are many other new and architecturally interesting buildings in this rapidly redeveloping area including the Newcastle Crown Courts, the Casino, a hotel converted from an old warehouse, bistro pubs, restaurants, office blocks, upmarket apartments complexes and a marina. The area has been extensively decorated with a number of pieces of modern sculpture and public art including the Swirle Pavillion, Keelrow, River God and Siren. The Quayside also hosts an historic Sunday market first recorded in 1736. Getting there: Quaylink (Route 2) Haymarket Interchange.
