The Royal Station hotel in Newcastle upon Tyne is housed in an imposing Victorian building right in the heart of the city centre. It stands directly next to the Central Rail Station (formerly the Royal Station) from which it takes its name. The history of the hotel dates back to 1858 when it was opened by Queen Victoria but all of the rooms have recently been refurbished and now feature all of the latest amenities that one would expect to find in a 3 star hotel. There are 144 rooms all of which feature a private bathroom, direct dial telephone, writing desk, TV, hairdryer and high speed Internet access. For business travellers there are 10 conference rooms, the largest of which can hold 200 delegates. The hotel also has its own Leisure Club, with an indoor swimming pool, steam room and Jacuzzi. The onsite restaurant is called the Empire Restaurant and there is also the Destination Bar, which serves cocktails and has a resident DJ.
