The Old Spitalfields Market in London stands on a site that has held a market since 1638 when a licence was awarded by King Charles I to sell fowl, flesh and roots on the Spital Fields on the then outskirts of East London. The site continued to be used primarily as a fruit and vegetable market until 1991 when the New Spitalfields Market opened in nearby Leyton and most of the traders relocated there. Today the eastern part of the site is still used as a general market, with food stalls and other stalls offering a wide range of different goods. It is open seven days a week but is especially popular on Sundays. The western part of the original site has been completely redeveloped and includes a large arts and craft market, restaurants, cafes and bars. A large number of the historic buildings that house the Old Spitalfields Market are Grade 2 listed buildings.
