Serving numerous domestic and international flights, the Christchurch Airport is the main air travel terminal for South Island, New Zealand. It was the first international airport in the country and now also the second busiest.
Located in the suburb of Harewood, Christchurch Airport lies just a 15-minute drive away from the Christchurch city centre, making it convenient for a short sightseeing session during any layover.
Summer Gets Busy at Christchurch International Airport
The Christchurch summer season runs from December to February. It is also the peak travel season for both locals and visitors. Although one of the best times to visit the city, accommodations, especially near the Christchurch airport, should be reserved early.

The conversation centre and zoo houses over 400 animals, including exotic and endangered species. They also offer close encounters with some animals – a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Also close by is the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve. There, you can book a reservation at their famous performance and dinner event. It’s a great way to learn about the native Maori culture and experience it firsthand.
Should you have time to spare, a visit to downtown Christchurch can easily be arranged. If you don’t want to drive, there are public bus and shuttle services that will take you to the city.
