Castle Hill Basin (Springfield, New Zealand)

Castle Hill Basin (in which the Kura Tawhiti Conservation Area lies) is located approximatley 30 km from Springfield, in the Canterbury region high country of New Zealand. Of particular interest in the area are extensive boulder fields created by the limestone rocks eroded by wind and water. Castle Hill has also connections to indigenous inhabitants of the South Island and is protected for this reason. There are also unique plants to be found here. The area is popular with rock climbers and boulderers but accessible to normal walking. There is a free car park within a 5 minute’s walk from the main boulder field (which is on private land). There is also a toilet for visitors. No food or drink outlets, so please bring supplies, particularly water. To access Castle Hill, take highway 73 for the West Coast. The boulder filed is visible to the left a few km after the Porter’s Pass.
