Birnam Oak (Dunkeld, United Kingdom)

The Birnam Oak stands near the south bank of the River Tay not far from the centre of the village of Birnam. The oak itself is a huge tree with spreading over large area and some of the lower branches are supported with wooden crutches. The circumference of the tree is about 7m and the bottom 3m of the trunk is hollow and burned out. The tree is traditionally thought to be the remainder of the Birnam Wood that played a pivotal role in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. In addition to the oak itself, there are some other very old trees nearby, including the Birnam Sycamore, at 300 years old but even larger than the oak at 8m n circumference. The site of the trees is well sign-posted from the centre of the village, along the Oak Road and around a playing field.
