Soho House (Birmingham, United Kingdom)

Soho House was the meeting place in the 18th century of the Lunar Society, hosted by Matthew Boulton. Boulton was one of the early Birmingham manufacturers and on land adjacent to Soho House he built one of the first factories. He and James Watt built the Boulton and Watt steam engine which in the 1770s helped to industrialise cotton production. The Lunar Society of industrialists and intellectuals included James Watt, Joseph Priestly, Josiah Wedgwood, Erasmus Darwin and visitors included Richard Arkwright and Benjamin Franklin. They would meet once a month (at full moon - hence the name) to discuss ideas and discoveries. Today the factory has long gone, but the house displays some of the ormolu gilded objects made in the factory. The dining room where the society met can be visited, as can the garden which Boulton designed. Entry is free and the house is open from 31 March to 28 October, Tuesdays to Sundays 11.30am to 4pm. Closed Mondays except Bank Holidays. A free history bus operates on the first Sunday of each month from May to October linking the main Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery with the five community museums, including Soho House.
