Exeter College (Oxford, United Kingdom)
Exeter College is the fourth oldest of Oxford University’s colleges and was founded by Walter de Stapleton, Bishop of Exeter in 1314. Exeter is one of the most centrally placed colleges in the city and along with Lincoln and Jesus Colleges, it is situated on Turl Street, the street which links the High Street to Broad Street. In terms of size, Exeter is one of the smaller and less wealthy of the Oxford Colleges but it still offers plenty of interest to visitors including a chapel built in the Victorian Gothic Revival style and heavily influenced by the Sainte Chapelle in Paris which contains some rare and valuable tapestries designed and made by the pre-Raphaelites Edward Byrne-Jones and William Morris who were both students at the college and met there. The stained glass in the chapel is also worthy of note. The college gardens offer some of the best views of the Radcliffe Camera anywhere in Oxford. Noteable alumni include the writers JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Philip Pullman, Martin Amis and Will Self as well as actors including Richard Burton, Imogen Stubbs and Alan Bennet as well as Roger Bannister and Liaquat Ali Khan, the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. The college is often open to visitors but hours may be irregular. It is best to phone ahead to confirm before visiting in order to avoid disappointment.
