St Albans Cathedral (St Albans, United Kingdom)

The full title of this church is the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban and it is a Church of England cathedral in the diocese of St Albans. Although the Benedictine abbey disappeared in the 16th century Dissolution of the Monasteries, the cathedral is still locally called “the Abbey”. St Alban was a 3rd century Romano-British martyr and the veneration of his burial site means that the cathedral can claim to be the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in the UK. A shrine developed into a Saxon basilica, but the basis of today’s building is the Norman church begun in 1077: the tower is the most significant remaining part of that period. At the time of its building it was the largest in England, and is till today the second longest cathedral. Later architectural styles of decorated and perpendicular gothic are also in evidence as modifications and rebuilding were undertaken. Major restoration was undertaken in the 19th century, some of it controversial and considered out of keeping with the original. The church was designated a cathedral in 1877. The Cathedral is open daily from 8.30am to 5.45pm and there is a shop and café. For details of services see the website.
