Stanley Harbour (Stanley, Falkland Islands)

Stanley Harbour is an inlet on the east coast of the island of East Falkland which serves the capital of the Falkland Islands, Stanley, as a harbour. Serving cruise ships, freighters, fishing boats and naval vessels, Stanley Harbour is the Falkland Island’s main port. Use of the harbour by incoming tourists has decreases since the opening of RAF Mount Pleasant, the islands’ international airport, but the island is still visited regularly by cruise ships which stop on the island, with the number of tourists often outnumbering the islanders. The harbour played an important role for the British forces in both World Wars. Following the Falklands War in 1982, a new port was developed in Mare Harbour for military use, which has reduced the use of Stanley Harbour by British armed forces. The harbour continues to be used by freighters, which import most of the resources required by the islanders and supply Stanley’s shops.
