RAF Mount Pleasant (Stanley, Falkland Islands)
RAF Mount Pleasant is a British military air base which provides civilian flights to the Falkland Islands. It is an hour’s drive from Stanley, the only city on the Falkland Islands and is located on the island of East Falkland. It was constructed in 1985 in response to the Falklands War of 1982, after which it was deemed necessary for there to be a permanent military base on the islands. RAF Mount Pleasant replaced an airfield in Stanley and is the only airport on the island. The Chilean-based LAN Airlines provides regular flights between the Falkland Islands and Punta Arenas, Río Gallegos and Santiago, while the Ministry of Defence provide flights between Oxford, England and the Falkland Islands. Being a functional military base, access to many areas will be restricted but there are some points of interest, such as the world’s longest corridor, nicknamed the “Death Star Corridor” by troops, which is roughly half a mile long. There is an embarkation tax of £22.50 for anyone who leaves the Falklands via Mount Pleasant.
