La mer de sable (Ermenonville, France)

The Mer de Sable is a theme park just outside Ermenonville, about 60 km north east of Paris. It has two distinguishing characteristics. It was the first theme park in France (opened in 1963) and it is constructed, as the name suggests, on a 20 hectare expanse of sand although far from the sea. The sand was laid down when sea levels were higher in the tertiary era and has now come to the surface by natural erosion. The park is divided into three areas: the Desert, the Wild West and the Jungle, each having a group of attractions and a spectacle, giving a total of 26 attractions and 3 shows. The attractions range from the gentle to the hair-raising to suit all ages. Current shows include displays of horsemanship based around a western theme and a ventriloquist. It is open from the beginning of April to the end of September from 10am to 6pm, within this period days when it is closed are on the website. Services offered include cafés and restaurants, free parking, picnic areas, wheelchair hire.
