    The Karoo National Park is a wildlife reserve in South Africa’s Western Cape. It was founded in 1979 and covers an area of 767.86 km2 (296.47 sq miles). It is one of 20 National Parks in South Africa. The region is known for its isolation and consists mainly of semi-desert. It provides an important habitat for several endangered species of tortoise as well as around 20 pairs of rare Black Vultures. It is also the chosen location of re-introduction projects for the Black Rhinoceros and the Riverine Rabbit, both of which are on the verge of extinction. Other species found here include Red Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest, Eland, Kudu, Springbok and both Plains Zebra and Cape Mountain Zebra. Popular activities within Karoo National Park include hiking, bird watching, game viewing and scenic drives. Access into the park is only possible between 5am and 10pm and outside these areas the perimeter gates are locked.
