Chowrasta is an open square at the centre of Darjeeling at the point where four pedestrian-only roads all meet. The name Chowrasta is a local word meaning ‘where four roads meet’ and is a key place for locals and tourists to promenade, do a bit of shopping or simply sit and watch the world pass by. At one end of the plaza is an ornamental fountain and at the other is a statue to a local dignitary which stands at the foot of Observatory Hill. Chowrasta offers panoramic views to either side. Chowrasta has many small shops and cafes around its perimeter as well as a tourist office and public toilets.
