Ocean Gate Inn is well positioned, in that it is just a short walk from the Santa Cruz Beach and the boardwalk, as well as the main street. You'll be close to downtown and there are a number of local restaurants from which to choose. There are several other decent attractions in the nearby area as well.
Guestrooms have balconies, several of which offer nice vistas of the mountains or the boardwalk. It's a nice thing to look out on when you wake up in the morning.
The mattresses here are pretty comfortable and should give you a decent night's rest.
Ocean Gate Inn seriously needs some attention. The exterior is pretty dirty and the patio furniture is dusty and past its best. The interior too, needs refurbishing as it feels terribly old and not very clean. The decor is very tired and the elevators are outdated as well. The bathrooms need some love. Many of the showers are leaky and their curtains are moldy.
The walls at this hotel seem very thin. You'll be able to hear people in other parts of the building and, what's more, the street outside is noisy. You'll be disturbed by the traffic sounds and by people walking past. If you are a light sleeper, be sure to bring your earplugs.
