World Peace Stupa (Leh, India)

The Shanti Stupa - also locally called the Japanese Peace Pagoda - sits on a high hillside on the outskirts of Leh in the village of Chandspa. It is a bright, white structure that can be seen from miles away - especially at night when it is illuminated. The Stupa was bulit by a group of Japanese Buddhists to commemorate two and a half millenia of Buddhism and to promote world peace. It was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 1985 and is a peaceful spot where tourists and worshippers alike can admire the views, get a cup of tea and a snack and take a moment of peace after a long climb (or a short drive) up to the summit. There is no entrance charge and the site is open from 5 am to 9 pm daily.
