Sopocani (Novi Pazar, Serbia)

Sopoćani monastery was built in the 13th century, by King Uroš I, son of King Stefan the first crowned King. Uroš’s sarcophagus is placed within the monastery complex, which was large at that time, but today only the Holy Trinity Church remains. The monastery represents the Raška style and its frescoes, painted in the first half of the 13th century, are said to be among the best painted in Byzantine style. The monastery was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 as Stari Ras and Sopoćani complex. According to UNESCO, Sopoćani monastery is a “reminder of the contacts between Western civilization and the Byzantine world”. It is located 16 kilometers from Novi Pazar, at the spring of the Raška River.
