Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka (Bhopal, India)

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee listed the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka in 2003. The Rock Shelters are situated on the southern end of the central Indian plateau in the foothills of Vindhyan mountains of Madhya Pradesh. The shelters take their name from Bhima, one of the five princes in the epic poem, the Mahabharata. The shelters occur in five clusters and each has paintings that are believed to date to the Mesolithic period. The palette of colours is mostly red and white and the paintings show scenes of everyday life including hunting, dancing and riding elephants as well as religious symbols. Bhimbetka is approximately 45 km from Bhopal and is connected by bus.
