    Rock-Art Sites (Kondoa, Tanzania)

There are a series of about 160 caves scattered over an area of 2,336km2 with paintings depicting people, animals and hunting scenes ranging from Middle Stone Age to Iron Age. Unfortunately many of them are deteriorated over the centuries. They were first discovered by some missionaries in 1908 but were given little attention until Mary Leakey published an illustrated book describing the art of these caves in 1983. The area can be reached by bus along the Dodoma-Arusha road; in Kondoa there is also an airstrip. In 2006 Kondoa Rock Art caves were listed as Unesco World Heritage Sites.
