Oak Alley Plantation (Vacherie, USA)

Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, Louisiana, is an antebellum estate of mansion and grounds. The name derives from the canopy of 300 year old oak trees which form a quarter-mile long avenue leading to the house. The trees pre-date the house which was constructed in 1839 in neo-classical style, and was at the centre of a large sugar-cane plantation. It was lavishly designed and decorated, surrounded by a colonnade and with marble floors. The property suffered during the Civil War but was restored and is now a protected National Historic Landmark. Tours of the house are provided by guides dressed in period costume, and other features such as a blacksmith shop and confederate army camp recreate the mid 19th century. Visitors are free to walk round the extensive grounds with a map. The property is open every day, details of guided tour times are on the website. There is a shop and restaurant, and access for disabled visitors on the ground floor.
