Mapungubwe National Park (Mapungubwe National Park, South Africa)

Located at the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers near the border between Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa , the Mapungubwe National Park (previously known as the Vhembe Dongola National Park) was declared as a World Heritage Site in 2001. It covers an area of approximately 28000 ha and is the natural habitat for varied wildlife and about 400 species of birds. The landscape offers riverine forests and sandstone formations, with facilities including view points, bird hides, picnic areas and a tree top boardwalk. A selection of game drives and guided walks are available, as well as a heritage tour which lasts approximately two and a half hours. Visitors can explore archaeological sites dating from the Early Stone Age and there are also a number of San art sites. Accommodation options include a lodge, bungalow camp and camping sites but no caravans are allowed. Limited access for disabled patrons is available and although much of the park is accessible to sedans there are areas which require 4x4 access. Gates open between 06h00 and 18h00 daily and the visitor centre operates from 08h00 to 16h00.
