The Manzanar National Historic Site near Independence, California is a former American-Japanese camp where over 110,000 men, women and children were held during the Second World War. The land was originally inhabited by Native Americans who cultivated apple orchards, which gave the area its name as Manzamar means “apple orchard” in Spanish. The Manzanar National Historic Site lies about 230 miles (370 kilometres) to the south of Los Angeles. It is situated in Owen’s Valley at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The site receives almost 100,000 visitors per annum.
