Le fort des têtes (Briançon, France)

The plateau des Trois Taªtes, on which the fort of the same name is sited, lies at 1440m above Briana§on overlooking the Durance river. Vauban had noted the strategic importance of the position when he was fortifying Briana§on and the construction of the fort began in 1721 after his death. Although big enough to shelter 1000 men and 70 pieces of artillery it was never finished. Many buildings remain incomplete and those that were completed were later put to different uses. The fort was linked to Briana§on by the Pont d’Asfeld, an arched fortified bridge. For visits consult the tourist office. Together with other fortifications around Briana§on and other Vauban works across France the fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
