Lake Mead National Recreation Area (Las Vegas, USA)

Lake Mead is the United States’ largest manmade reservoir. Situated in the midst of the high deserts of the American West, it makes for a dramatic contrast with its surroundings. The lake was created as a result of building Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, a project that was completed in1936. The lake is 110 miles long and when full it has more than 500 miles of shoreline. It serves as the primary source of water for the city of Las Vegas and as a major water recreation area. With five marinas and nine main access points, water-based activities include boating, water skiing, kayaking and canoeing, fishing, scuba diving and swimming in designated areas. Camping, hiking, biking, picnicking, and nature trails are also part of the lake’s attractions. Lake Mead is administered by the National Parks Service through the Lake National Mead Recreation Area. The Lake Mead Visitor Center (aka Alan Bible Visitor Center) includes exhibit space, discovery center, information desk, and bookstore/gift shop.
