Konark The Sun Temple (Puri, India)

Konark is a small town on the Bay of Bengal known for its 13th Century Sun Temple which is built of black granite and was erected by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. The temple which is also known as the Black Pagoda takes the form of a chariot of the god Surya (the sun god) and is covered in carvings or flowers, geometric patters, human figures and gods. The carvings also include scenes from the Kama Sutra. The Sun Temple is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India.
