Kamakhya Temple (Guwahati, India)

The Kamakhya Temple is located on the western side of Guwahati in Assam where it occupies a site on Nilachal Hill. It was constructed in 1565 during the Koch dynasty and was built on the instruction of Chilarai, who had it designed in the style of a typical medieval temple with three main chambers and a beehive shaped dome. Today the temple is a major place of pilgrimage for Hindus and it is the main temple in the region dedicated to the various forms of the mother goddess. The Kamakhya Temple hosts two major annual festivals. These are the Ambubachi Mela and the Navaratri, both of which attract thousands of people.
