Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen (Berlin, Germany)
The Gedenkstätte Berlin-Hohenschönhausen is also known as the “Stasi-Knast” what means in English “Stasi-clink”. The Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (MfS / Ministry for State Security), commonly known as the Stasi (from Staatssicherheit), was the main security (secret police) and intelligence organization of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and here was their prison. In 1994 the prison was turned into a memorial and can now be visited. To the tasks of the memorial belongs the mediacy of the prison´s history from 1945 until 1989.There are exhibitions, presentations and publications. Furthermore the memorial should inform the public about political justice in the former GDR. Most parts of the building are completly hold up which causes an authentic atmosphere. To see the prison you have to take part in a guided tour. The tours are guided by former inmates. It is not necessary to book a tour in advance if you come alone or with a small group. If you are more then 8 persons, book a tour for a group 4-5 weeks in advance. Guided tours are offered at the following times: Monday till Friday: 11am and 1pm On Tuesday and Thursday is an additional tour at 3pm On weekends hourly from 10am till 4pm Entrance fee: 3 Euro, reduced 1,50 Euro, no entrance fee for students. Nearest public transportation: M5, station Freienwalder Straße, from there it is a 10 minutes walk Bus 256, stop Liebenwalder Straße/Genslerstraße
