Castle of Fontainebleau (Fontainebleau, France)

This royal castle was used by French kings and emperors for centuries, from St Louis in the 12th century right up to Napoleon III in the 19th. Its setting in the forest of Fontainebleau, prime hunting country, helped make it popular with the court. Successive reigns left their mark on the building and kings were born (Louis XIII) and died (Philippe IV) here. Napoleon when he came to power favoured it over Versailles; his abdication and exile to Elba in 1814 was signed at Fontainebleau and he said his farewells at the foot of the horseshoe staircase at the front of the Chateau. The Chateau and surrounding park are now a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. The visit takes in many rooms and state apartments, although not all the Chateau is accessible. An audio guide is provided as part of the entrance ticket and there are also multi-lingual descriptions at the information points. Outside are an English-style garden, a French formal garden and a lake on which rowing boats can be hired. There is a lift in the Chateau for disabled visitors. Two areas - the museum of Napoleon and Fontainebleau in the Second Empire - can only be visited with a guide (French only). These tours are available approximately four times a day and need to be reserved in advance. An additional charge is payable. The website has details of opening hours for the Chateau and gardens throughout the year, entrance charges and also comprehensive details of public transport links (including a timetable from the Gare de Lyon in central Paris).
