Carrière Square (Nancy, France)

Stanislas Leszczynski, Duke of Lorraine, opened up the centre of Nancy by having three squares built: Place Stanislas, Place d’Alliance and this one the Place de la Carrière. All three are now designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The word “carrière” referred to a tilt-yard used for jousting and was outside the walls until the town was extended in the 16th century. Stanislas’s town planning in the mid 18th century linked the old and new towns and created a harmonious space. The north end is closed by the Palais du Gouverneur with its colonnade of classical columns and to the south there is a triumphal arch, Arc Héré, which links the square with the Place Stanislas.
