Augrabies Falls (Augrabies, South Africa)
The Augrabies Falls are located in the Northern Cape Province, around 120 km west from Uppington. Due to the thundering noise of the water masses cascading down the 56 m high waterfall it was named “Ankoerebis”, which means “place of big noise”, by the original Hottentot residents of the area. This original name was changed later into Augrabies by Trek Boer settlers. The water that feeds the falls derives from the Oranje river which then continues its way through an 18 km long and 240 m deep gorge. The waterfall is surrounded by the Augrabies Falls National Park which covers and area of 820 square km and is home to the Kokerboom (Quiver tree) , Klipspringer, African Fish Eagle, Broadley’s Flat Lizard, Verreaux’s Eagle, Antelopes, Giraffe, Springbok and Rhinoceros. A camp site, restaurant, shop and tourist information centre are located within the park. Several hiking trails run throughout the park and it is possible to go canoeing on the river.
