    Ághion Óros (Mount Athos, Greece)

The peninsula of Holy Mountain is the third of Chalcidice, with irregular terrain, consisting of hills, between them Athos, 2035m. In the year 883 the first imperial chrysobull concerning Mount Athos was issued by Basil I the Macedonian. This favoured the development of Mount Athos into a monastic republic. Today the Mount Athos region is a self administering part of the Greek State and is under the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Twenty monasteries are to be found on the peninsula, built between the 10th and 11th century. The capital is Karyes with the seat of Holy Community and the Civil Governor’˜s office. Here is the Church of the Protaton with the icons of the Blessed Virgin known as ‘Axion Estin’ and of Christ ‘Antiphonetes’ that are known to all the Orthodox world. The visit to Mount Athos is permitted only to men after special permission with a duration of four days. From 1988 the Holy Mountain has been included in the World Heritage List of UNESCO.
