Caleta de Fuste – purpose built for great holidays

Many holiday destinations have developed over time around an existing village or resort, but Caleta de Fuste in Fuerteventura was instead purposefully created, around a sheltered cove, to be a holiday resort and provide visitors with a great holiday destination. There are, however, some 17th century fortifications which give Caleta de Fuste its local name of Castillo. To make things more confusing, Caleta de Fuste is also known simply as Caleta, as well as Costa Caleta and El Castillo. With a pretty harbour, modern shopping centre and plenty of activities on offer, Caleta de Fuste has something for everyone.

Relax on the beach or take to the sea

The large crescent shaped beach at Caleta de Fuste is a great place to visit and relax, whether you want to go swimming, do some sunbathing, or find a fun place for the children to play. The beach has golden sands, which is specially imported, and it gently shelves into the water which makes it a safe place for little ones to paddle. If you are feeling energetic, there are plenty of activities to get involved in including windsurfing and kitesurfing, while there are also boat and submarine trips available from the harbour for those who prefer to take it easy. Diving is a popular pastime here too. You will find a diving school nearby to rent equipment from if you are an experienced diver, or alternatively there are diving classes available for all ages if you or the family want to learn. If you do go into the sea, make sure you keep an eye out for the dolphins, turtles and other marine creatures that live in the waters here. Away from the main beach, some new beaches have been created to improve facilities for guests at some of the hotels.

Hit the greens, or the casino

Caleta de Fuste is a great holiday destination for golf lovers. With two 18-hole golf courses and a fabulous year-round warm climate, where even in January and February the temperature still hits an average of 18 degrees, there will not be many days where you cannot enjoy a round or two. If you are not the golfer in your family and so have time to spare, you can still find plenty of other things to do. Both of the golf clubs offer alternative facilities, and include swimming pools, sports facilities, and spa treatments. Alternatively, you might want to choose one of the hotels which offer in-house spa facilities instead. If you prefer to try a game of chance, rather than a game of sporting skill, there is also a small casino where you can enjoy a flutter or two. This casino is made up mainly of slot machines, although you can also choose to play poker and blackjack at the tables, while there is also a restaurant and bar for dining and drinking. If you would like to get out into nature you can always do it by bike, as there are lots of cycle tracks locally along with plenty of bikes that are available to rent.

The world in miniature

Caleta de Fuste is home to an unusual museum called the Dreams House Museum. This private collection of models and toys includes a whole host of childhood memories, whether it is model cars, trains and planes, or dolls houses and action figures from popular films such as Star Wars. Some of the models are quite old and rare. This museum will not be to everyone’s taste, but it may bring back some happy memories for you, and best of all the passionate museum owners are happy to show you around personally if they are not too busy. From down at the harbour you can catch a mini train which will take you around the town and up the unusually named Chipmonk Mountain. Really a large hill, there are good views to be had from the top whether you choose to walk or ride up to the top. Of course, you may not even have to leave your hotel to find things to do, as many of the hotels in Caleta de Fuste offer lots of activities and a variety of entertainments.
