Short hikes nearby will lead you to a holy fishpond and to the Shey Palace and Monastery which was built in 15th century by King Lachen Spalgegon. The monastery is known for its gold gilded statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. Also, this place will serve a sumptuous food for your imagination as you walk through the hills and see the numerous rock formations associated with god-king Gyalam Kesar and his wife Cho Cho Dugu (local folk tale). Thiksey monastery which resembles Potala Palace of Tibet is just 5kms from the camp. This splendid gonpa is the largest monastery in central Ladakh and is graced by a magnificent 15 meters high statue of Maitreya (Future Buddha.)
