Yellowstone National Park (Yellowstone National Park, USA)
Yellowstone was the first national park to be created in the USA, and the world, in 1872. At over 3,000 square miles most of it is in Wyoming but parts are also in Idaho and Montana. There are three main reasons to visit: the geothermal activity, the wildlife and the landscape. Underneath Yellowstone is a volcano of enormous potential power. It makes its presence felt by erupting geysers, hot springs and coloured pools of boiling water. The most famous of these features is Old Faithful, a geyser which erupts around 20 times a day to a height of over 100 feet. Wildlife such as buffalo, elk, deer and moose roam free. And the whole landscape backdrop comprises rivers, lakes, canyons, waterfalls and huge forests, although about 40% of the forest was destroyed by forest fires in the late 1980s and is only now recovering. With such a large area available, the website is invaluable for visitors to plan their trip. There is a charge for entering the Park.
