    The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore stretches along 35 miles (56 kilometres) of Lake Michigan’s shoreline. Established in October 1970 the park covers an area of 288.08 km2 and now attracts over 1.2 million visitors a year. The area features ancient forests, beaches and dune formations and includes 21 inland lakes where regional fauna and flora can be observed. Historic sites within the region include the North and South Manitou Islands, the South Manitou Island Lighthouse and Glen Haven Village. Numerous trails cross the area but admission charges apply to enter the park, details of which can be found on the website. There are however several free entry days each year. A visitor centre is located at Empire.
