Skansen (Stockholm, Sweden)

Skansen is an open air museum that is located on a hillside on the island of Djurgården in Stockholm. It was established in 1891 by Artur Hazelius and was Sweden’s first open air museum. The concept behind this museum was to preserve the country’s way of life for future generations to enjoy. This was achieved by taking over 150 original buildings from all over the country, dismantling them brick by brick and rebuilding them on the 75-acre site at Djurgården. All of the buildings that we see today are original with the exception of three, which are replicas. These buildings include a 16th century Älvros farmhouse and a Skogaholm Manor house that dates from 1680. Skansen is arranged to resemble a whole traditional village through the ages and in many of the buildings there are people dressed in traditional clothing carrying out typical crafts including glass blowing and shoe making and there are also blacksmiths and silversmiths. In addition to the buildings in the village there is also a small zoo that contains a selection of native animals like reindeer, moose and wolverines. This attraction receives over 1.3 million visitors every year.
