New River Gorge Bridge (Fayetteville, USA)

The New River Gorge Bridge is maintained by the West Virginia Department of Transportation and forms part of U.S. Route 19 where it crosses the New River near Fayetteville. Opened to the public on 22 October 1977, it has a height of 267m and is the second heighest bridge in the USA. With a length of 924m it also had the distinction of being the longest steel arch span worldwide until it was surpassed in 2003 by the Lupu Bridge in China. To blend with the surroundings and save on maintenance costs the bridge is constructed of unpainted steel which has a natural rust-like appearance. New River Gorge Bridge is located within the National Park Service protected area and an NPS visitor center is available. It also features Base jumping during the annual Bridge Day Festival which is held each 3rd Saturday in October.
