Jefferson County Court House (Charles Town, USA)

The Jefferson County Court House is located at the corner of North George and East Washington Streets in Charles Town. Built in 1836 on a lot originally donated to the city by Charles Washington, the red-brick building is a Greek revival structure with Doric columns and a clock tower topped with an unusual square dome. The court house is best known as the site of the treason trials held in 1859 after the raid led by John Brown against the Federal Arsenal at nearby Harpers Ferry. The raid and subsequent trial and execution of Brown are credited with inciting the conditions that led to the American Civil War. In the 1920s, another well-publicized series of treason trials occurred against union leaders whose efforts to organize in West Virginia’s coalfields had erupted in violence. The court house remains a working center for Jefferson County government. Guided tours are offered periodically.
