Chuao Plantation (Maracay, Venezuela)

The Chuao Plantation is located within the region which is now known as the Henri Pittier National Park and is world famous for its production of cocoa. It has been nominated for inclusion as an UNESCO World Heritage Site and dates from the 16th century. The local residents are descended from African slaves and their are a number of colonial buildings and sights such as the Casa del Alto which dates from 1652 and the Plaza de Secado churchyard which dates from 1785 and is used to dry the cocoa beans. The church itself was declared a National Monument in1960 and also houses the Pardon Cross (Cruz el Perdón) on the left of its courtyard.
