This upscale city centre hotel in a historic nineteenth-century building is just 300 metres from the banks of the famed Mississippi River. Along with on-site dining and drinking venues, Hotel St. James boasts in-house shops and a spa.

Convenient location with impressive views.
Guests were pleased to find that they were across the road from many of the town’s shops, bars and restaurants. The hotel is in close proximity to the river which can be seen from many of the rooms as well as the hotel’s communal areas. Quite a few guests said that it was a real treat waking up to the picture-postcard views from their en-suites.

Guests were pleased to find a number of dining options at the hotel as well as a quality coffee. During their free time many enjoyed visiting the spa and during bad weather guests appreciated being able to browse the on-site gift shops.

Full of history and old-world charm.
The hotel’s imposing building dates back to the 19th century and guests said that they felt like they had stepped back in time during their stay here. Many appreciated the numerous pieces of antique furniture scattered around the hotel as well as the original period features such as the elegant wood panelling in the lounge.

Basic room amenities.
Guests said that they were disappointed to find only a few basic amenities in their rooms and objected to not having tea and coffee making facilities as well as fridges which are usually supplied as standard.

Noise disturbances.
The hotel is located close to railway tracks and some guests said they were disturbed by the sound of the trains which prompted many not to open their windows. Some also mentioned that the soundproofing was rather poor as they were disturbed by noise from the adjoining suites.

Some of the guests said that the rooms would benefit from modernization as they objected to the worn upholstery, old-fashioned bathroom fixtures and peeling wallpapers.
