With a chequered past as a WW II base and then a school hostel, Kirkwall Youth Hostel is situated close to Kirkwall’s historic centre. It offers good value accommodation and true Scottish hospitality. There are both private rooms and family/dorm rooms available. As with most hostels, décor and furnishings are basic, but you should have everything you need for a good night’s sleep. Kirkwall hostel has the usual guest lounge for meeting other travellers, and also a fully equipped kitchen guests are welcome to use. There is also a laundry and drying room for if your clothes and gear get drenched. A basic breakfast is available on-site, but staff will be happy to offer recommendation for the best places to eat in town. The Orkney Islands have a wealth of Neolithic sites. The incredible Ring of Brodgar, a stone circle dating from the late Neolithic period, is 11 miles to the west.
