Very accommodating and welcoming, they provide an excellent service and are keen to help guests to enjoy every aspect of their stay.

Well prepared and presented, breakfast is the ideal start to any day here. Choices include full English or a generous continental style selection.

Very few frills here but the place is very clean and comfortable. The lack of en-suite facilities isn’t a problem as there are plenty of shared bathrooms and toilets, so no queues. The rooms do include wash hand basins.

The food itself is great; it’s just the slightly funereal atmosphere that’s the problem. A little background music might lighten the mood.

It’s all a bit dated and seems stuck in some sort of time warp of the post war years. This, actually, is quite a charming feature; although it’s clear that, very soon, major refurbishment should be on the cards.

Today, hotels are assumed to be en-suite and the alternative, throwback to the days of boarding houses, is unthinkable. To find a non en-suite hotel is something of a novelty … but one that quickly wears off. Yes, there are plenty of communal facilities but they’ll never replace the privacy that everyone has now come to expect.
