Hotel D Gomar (Isla Mujeres, Mexico)

OK, it may have seen better days and there are aspects that are out of date. Who cares, though, at these prices and in accommodation that is very clean with comfortable beds and lovely bed linen and towels. Members of staff are noticeably, excessively friendly and helpful.

The fact that Wi-Fi is in the public areas draws people here and a friendly atmosphere and exchange of views is created. There is also a shared eating area and there's tea and coffee here too. ‘Funny money' is here in the currency exchange kiosk ... where no fees are charged!

It's so close to the warm waters of the ocean ... and to the buzzing centre of this friendly town with lots of shops, bars and restaurants.

Under normal circumstances and faced with shower water that is hardly warm, you'd be complaining to the hotel management. Here and in this climate … it becomes a sort of refreshing luxury. It ‘should' be hot, of course -but never mind, eh!

With no lift, it's quite a drag carrying luggage to rooms on those higher floors. The very distinct bonus on higher floors, is the more than welcome breeze. *So, too, are the ferry and sea views. There's a potential security problem though, with easy access to the room from uninvited guests. Yes, there are things that could be better, but at this price, you've got a great deal.

You are really close to the ferry, so some noise is inevitable. *It's always well worth pushing the boat out, though and opt for quieter, upgraded accommodation.
